Orthopedics and Traumatology
What is Orthopedics and Traumatology?
Orthopedics and traumatology is the department involved in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal system diseases as well as correction of bodily injuries occurring in traumas and accidents.
All the operations in our orthopedics and traumatology department are carried out by our experienced physicians, and our patients are able to walk on the day following the operation.
Procedures Performed in Orthopedics and Traumatology Area
To answer the question, “What is arthroscopy?” in the first place, arthroscopy is a method allowing visualization of insides of joints through small incisions and at the same time, allowing treatment simultaneously.
Meniscus tears: Meniscus tears can result from abrupt rotation of the knee or repeated kneeling down and standing up movements. This can cause pain and swelling in the knee. At the same time, sounds can be heard with knee movements or knee-locking can occur. Arthroscopic repair is carried out in meniscus treatment. Meniscus can be removed or repaired based on the location of tear.
Ligament tears: Ligament tears are especially seen in the injuries of anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. Treatment involves the arthroscopic correction of the ligament.
Cartilage abrasion: Joint cartilage can be damages after impacts or as a result of aging. Sometimes, cartilage pieces broken off can move freely within the joint, a situation called “joint mice”. Revascularization of the cartilage is ensured with treatment.
Repair of the Bankart lesion and Rotator Cuff: Bankart, labial tear and rotator cuff repairs are carried out after shoulder dislocations.
Arthroscopic interventions are performed for cartilage lesions of the ankle.
Hip and Knee Joint Prostheses
Prosthesis, revisions and tibial osteotomy procedures are carried out in hip and knee calcification, avascular necrosis of bones and congenital hip dislocations.
Hip and knee joint prostheses are recommended to patients who are unable to sleep because of pain, have difficulties when climbing up or down the stairs, have difficulties when sitting with intractable pain.
Trauma Surgery
Treatments of fractures, dislocations, muscle or tendon tears or breaks are carried out in Traumatology. Knee prostheses and hip prostheses are also used in the trauma surgery if deemed necessary.
Spinal Surgery
Congenital or acquired curvatures of the spine, kyphosis, fractures associated with osteoporosis and fractures related to traumas are treated in the area of spinal surgery of orthopedics and traumatology.
Pediatric Surgery
Pediatric orthopedics is involved in surgical treatment of congenital hip dislocation developing in the period between childhood and adulthood, clubfoot, congenital deformities, flatfoot, and tumors and fractures. The greatest difference between the pediatric orthopedic surgery and the adult orthopedic surgery is that the pediatric orthopedic surgery is involved in the developing musculoskeletal system.
Foot Surgery
Treatment of ingrown toenails, toe deformities, hallux valgus (bunion of the big toe), os trigonum (ankle) syndrome and fractures are included in the foot surgery area of orthopedics and traumatology.
Deformity Surgery
Methods used in deformity surgery change based on the age group that deformity is seen, and location and severity of the deformity. Areas of intervention in bone deformity procedures are determined according to the stage. While interventions made only on the involved area will suffice in early periods, other areas neighboring the affected area can be intervened on in advance stages.
Stem Cell Applications
Stem cell treatment is used in the treatment of orthopedic diseases like in many other areas. In our orthopedics and traumatology department, stem cell treatment with stem cells harvested from the abdominal fatty tissue or hip bones are used for the treatment of calcifications in hips and ankles. Stem cell treatment is generally used in patients not electable for surgical procedures.
Hand Surgery
Orthopedics and traumatology is involved also in the hand surgery. This area investigates all kinds of injuries, diseases and medical problems of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, tendons, blood vessels, nerves and bones in the area between the fingertips and elbow.
Sports Traumatology
Activities without warming up in sports can result in injuries. During such activities, injuries of the knee joint in the first place, and in the ankle, hip and groin area, shoulder joint, foot and thigh areas, spine, elbow joint and had can be seen. All the sportive injuries are successfully treated in our Orthopedics and Traumatology Department.
Lengthening Surgery
Lengthening surgery is performed not to obtain a better appearance, but to correct the malfunction arising from the inequality between legs. The differences between legs can be equalized by shortening the longer leg or lengthening the shorter leg in this operation performed in our Orthopedics and traumatology Department.
